Clomid for Men – Does it Really Boost Testosterone?

Get test kit now

Clomid® for men (Clomiphene Citrate) is an off-label medication that boosts sperm production and testosterone levels. It doesn't harm fertility, which is the advantage it has over testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for younger men wishing to optimize their hormones.

Clomid Summary:

• Clomiphene citrate (Clomid®) is an FDA approved selective estrogen receptor modulator, primarily a medication used to treat infertility in women.

• Clomid is often used 'off label' 1 to treat infertility in men.

• Clomid is also used 'off label' as a testosterone booster 2 while maintaining fertility in men.

• Clomid blocks estrogen receptors in the brain, increasing the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormones (GnRH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH).

• FSH and LH are released into the circulation, acting on the testes and ovaries to kick start and support their reproductive functions.

• In women, gonadotropins stimulate follicle maturation in the ovaries, encouraging ovulation and increasing estradiol in the blood.

• In men, Clomid stimulates testosterone production by blocking estrogen receptors in the brain. It tricks the brain into thinking it needs more hormones, which leads to more testosterone and sperm production.

What Is Clomid Used for In Men?

Clomiphene and its derivative enclomiphene increase testosterone levels in men who want to maintain sperm count and motility. At Male Excel, we only prescribe bioidentical hormone replacement therapy to men over 38 to protect the fertility of younger men. Clomid is effective for men under the age of 38 suffering from reduced testosterone levels and the associated side effects.

Why men under 38 might need to take Clomid?

  • Lack of Energy
  • Depression
  • Loss of vitality
  • Weight gain
  • Muscle loss (Atrophy)
  • Weight Gain
  • To increase Testosterone level
  • To increase sperm count

Bioidentical testosterone replacement therapy slows and even stops the natural production of testosterone in the testicles. For this reason, Clomid is an excellent option for men wishing to continue natural production and maintain fertility.

Compared with bioidentical testosterone replacement therapy, Clomid is a great alternative because:

  • Clomid maintains and stimulates natural testosterone production
  • Clomid has few side effects and has a long track record
  • Clomid comes in tablet form.
  • It is cheap and affordable.

25-50mg of Clomid per day usually increases sperm count and testosterone levels (free and total) within a couple of months. Clomid helps the body produce more testosterone by increasing LH levels. FSH supports sperm during their 74-day maturation process. Since testosterone is the primary hormone required for the synthesis of sperm, a higher concentration in the body, means more sperm.

Studies 2 show that low does Clomid administration increases testosterone levels, quoting

"Low dose clomiphene citrate effectively elevates serum testosterone levels and improves the testosterone/estradiol ratio in men with hypogonadism. This therapy represents an alternative to testosterone therapy by stimulating the endogenous androgen production pathway." Shabsigh A, Kang Y, Shabsign R, et al.

Does Clomid Work as Well as TRT?

Clomid uses a different approach to increasing testosterone than traditional TRT (testosterone replacement therapy). It is not quite as effective as TRT at optimizing testosterone. However, you can expect to achieve between a 100 and 200 % increase in testosterone levels using Clomid. This increase in testosterone levels usually provides significant relief from the symptoms of low testosterone levels while maintaining fertility. The benefits of Clomid are similar as with TRT.

  • Improved libido and sexual satisfaction
  • Reduced bad cholesterol (LDL)
  • Increased metabolism
  • Improved cardiovascular health
  • Increased lean muscle mass and strength
  • Decreased body fat (dangerous visceral fat)
  • Increased confidence, positivity, memory, and brain function
  • Reduced feelings of depression
  • Increased energy levels
  • Improved sleep
  • More equipped to deal with stress
  • Reduced risk of type 2 diabetes and relief from insulin resistance

What are The Benefits of Clomid over Injections and Creams?

Clomid promotes the natural production of testosterone in the testicles. Clomid is an easy-to-swallow pill taken daily, and it is available in generic form, making it cheap to buy. Clomid does not shrink your testicles like traditional TRT and preserves fertility. 4

Results vary depending on your base hormone levels, with few side effects. With Clomid, there is no need to inject, and you don't have the same transference risks you have with testosterone cream.

What Are the Downsides to Clomid?

If you have reduced testosterone levels with Clomid, it takes longer to see results than with testosterone injection therapy and creams. Clomid can reduce libido in some patients; however, this is unusual. There have been a few reports of blurred vision in those taking Clomid; again, this is pretty rare.

What are the Side Effects of Clomid in Men?

Side effects of Clomid are rare and usually mild. Research shows Clomid is well tolerated by most men helping them reach 'normal' testosterone levels and improve low T symptoms. Studies 5 also show that there was "no significant adverse event in any patient treated with clomiphene citrate."

The most common side effects in men taking Clomid may include: 5

  • Changes in Mood
  • Sore Breasts
  • Blurry vision
  • Weight gain
  • Acne

Some men rarely experience other reactions like high blood pressure (hypertension), altered taste, asthma, flushing, nausea, extreme thirst, and aching joints.

Is Clomid Right for a Good Choice for Low T?

Most men tolerate Clomid very well. In studies,6 most patients who take it see improvement from reduced testosterone symptoms within 3 months of starting treatment.

If you are under 38 and experiencing low testosterone side effects, we would advise taking our 'at home blood spot test.' This easy-to-use test kit eliminates needing to visit a clinic and draw blood. Once complete the test highlights key hormone levels and establishes if Clomid will increase your testosterone to reduce the associated symptoms.
